The Bemba People

The Bemba (pronounced bim-BAH) live in the Luapula, Copperbelt, and Northern providences of Zambia. They are the largest tribe in Zambia and their influence is felt throughout the country.  The Bemba have always been receptive to spiritual matters.  Traditionally, Bemba people believed that the world was controlled by the spirits of their ancestors.  Although currently the Bemba are considered “evangelized”, most “Christians” are only so by name.  So-called Christian beliefs are often mixed with aspects of traditional religion.  One result of this people’s openness to spiritual matters is the fast growth of cults among the Bemba.  Many have never really heard the truth about a life-changing relationship with Jesus.  The full Bible has been translated into the Chibemba language.
